WELCOME


We have a population here of only 1350 but another 1000 plus in the surrounding farming area. The Waikato river forms a lake just in front of my house. This is one of the nine hydro lakes on the Waikato. We are part of Taupo County which is a big tourist area. The volcanoes are in this area. Good for skiing and tramping. A part of the film Lord of the Rings was filmed near here.

FOR many years I was a radio ham with the call sign of ZL2BAO. This hobby enabled me to make many friends around the world, some of whom I was able to meet.
I did a dxped to Cook Islands and made 6000+ contacts, and also had a trip to England in 1985 where I met some of the people I had talked to. I ran the Pacific dx net for a while, which was amazing. We had check-ins from princes, shars, film stars, postmen, housewives and even a coal miner. Ham radio was a great equalsier.
There was also the challengers of trying to collect contacts in 100 countries, for DXCC award and in the process meeting more people.

I did not realise when I got my license that while doing communication work, I would be riding in jet boat races,being tail-end charlie in car rallies or helping search and rescue from a helicopter. Lots of adventure.
Now the internet and mobile phones have done away with all that.
